“A disciple is a follower of Jesus Christ who lives in biblical community
and is committed to becoming like Him by obeying Him, serving Him and sharing Him.”
– McLean Bible Church definition of a disciple
The next installment of our discipleship definition break-down is “who lives in biblical community….” I’ve heard of “biblical community” my whole life, as I grew up in the church. I would say that I even experienced it at times, but really didn’t understand the implications of TRUE biblical community until I went to college.
I attended a Bible college in Chicago where we literally lived communally. We girls lived on the same…

– McLean Bible Church definition of a disciple
Over the next several weeks here on the blog, we are going to unpack McLean Bible Church’s definition of discipleship so that you may clearly understand the true meaning of becoming/being a disciple according to the Word of God. We will divide the definition above into segments, beginning this week with, “A disciple is a follower of Jesus Christ…”

By Dave & Karen Howard, MBC Arlington Attendees
Our decision to attend MBC Arlington was a lengthy, sometimes bewildering process. We had been members at MBC Tysons for several years and were serving in Marriage Mentors and City Impact. However, when we moved to Crystal City as empty nesters in 2011, it became more difficult to be involved in events at the Tysons campus outside of the worship services. We loved MBC but felt called by God to plant ourselves in Arlington; unfortunately for us, the only MBC ministry in Arlington at that time (Frontline) was for those in their 20s & 30s! We did a search and visited some other churches in Arlington, yet our quandary was that our…

My awe for who God is and His plan for me has grown through reading Part Four of Multiply, “Understanding the Old Testament.” I took Old and New Testament Surveys during my four years at a Christian college and have some seminary under my belt. Even so, I have never before been positioned to take in the whole panorama of God’s plan to relate to His people like I have through studying Multiply. Let me share what reading Part Four of Multiply is doing in my life.
If you are like me, you have set out to read the whole Bible in a year numerous times, and have made…

Psalm 1:1-3
“Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree firmly planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers.”
I once heard Tim Keller tell the story about what trees have done to the sidewalks of New York City. The trees that were first planted were weak and the thought of what they were capable of in the distant…
An Interview with Angel Turbeville, MBC Bethesda Director of Small Groups, and Helen Lee, MBC Bethesda Attendee
In the fall, I had the joy of co-leading a Friday night Multiply women’s group for MBC Bethesda. As our group started meeting, it was a joy to see the diversity, both ethnically and spiritually. Spiritually, some women had been faithful believers for years and some women were fairly new in their faith. One woman in particular, Helen, was a brand new Christian. I asked her to share her experience so that others might be encouraged to join a Multiply group. We learn and are challenged by each other’s views, questions, and varying levels of experience. The discussions in our Friday night group were so very rich because of…
“Let’s hurry up and finish the study,” said one of our ladies during small group a few weeks ago. “So we can clean the apartment for her!” she finished, bursting with excitement.
We’ve been meeting for small group in a lovely Ballston apartment for the past two years. Our “hostess with the mostess”, as we like to call her, had to leave group early that night, and the ladies couldn’t wait to serve her by giving the place a little mid-week sprucing up.
Talk about melting my heart.
Our small group went on to eagerly pick up cups and snacks, put away clean dishes, wash the dirty ones, empty the trash, wipe the counters, clean the bathroom, and fold the clothes of our…
