“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:14-16 NIV84)
Have you ever been house hunting? Here’s one ad you might have missed: “House situated in hillside town with lovely pastoral views. This single room home will accommodate any size family with plenty of space for your cows and donkeys. It only takes one candle to light up the whole house! ” I bet you’d jump right on that one!
Yet, that’s the kind of house where Jesus lived in Nazareth, a hillside town. And that was the picture in His mind when He said to His disciples: “You are the light of the world…” (Matthew 5:14)
Everything Jesus said that was true of Him, He now wants to be true of you. He was God’s light in His home and in His home town. The baton has passed to you. He who proclaimed, “I am the Light of the world!” now declares, “You are the light of the world!” This astonishing profundity is fulfilled in simplicity: Live with honor, speak with respect, love others in practical ways, and give generously. Not as a show, but to show Jesus to your world. Others will praise your Father. That’s the awesome power of light.
